One more week have prepared for you a post dedicated to the city of Valencia. With this we open a series of articles we will call «Singular Markets in Valencia» where you will discover markets with charm and history. We open this section with the legendary Mercado de Colón that was built between 1914 and 1916. It was designed by Francisco Mora Berenguer and represents the modernist architecture at its best. It is located in the Eixample area and is a National Monument.
It was built as a result of population growth in the neighbourhood of majority bourgeois, which generated a number of needs to attend. This led to the construction of a food market: Mercado de Colón.
Nowadays, after a rehabilitation project, the market has a more recreational use. If you visit it will find many local with one thing in common: the best quality. Examples are: La Casa de L’Orxata, Las Delicias Monica Sprockets, Ricard Camarena Columbus, and fruit stand and fish market stalls among others.
What amazes every visitor is the spectacle of the roof and columns, its open architecture, the paintings that decorate the corners representing the Valencian culture. Therefore, we advise you to visit the market and stand in every corner to delight yourself with the smallest details of the monument. Finally, grab site on the terrace to brighten up your city tour with a snack in the centre of Valencia in one of the most chic areas. And last advice, the best month to visit the Mercado de Colón is December; the decoration will amazed you.
